Men's Soccer Team Wins Region 19 Title;
Inverso Records 400th Win

10/30/07

The 51黑料 men’s soccer team capped off an exciting regular season by winning the Region 19 title game 4-1 against Essex CC (NJ) at home on October 27. The Vikings took the lead on a goal by freshman forward Rob Cabrera with 11 minutes remaining in the first half. Cabrera contributed another goal just seconds before halftime. In the second half, sophomore defender Keron Poncho scored on a corner kick and freshman midfielder Luke Stedmond added the fourth goal. Cabrera was selected as Offensive Player of the Game. Phil Blake was named the Defensive Player of the Game. The Vikings ended the regular season with a 12-5-1 record.

The win was no. 400 for MCCC Head Coach Charlie Inverso, who has coached the Vikings for 19 years. 51黑料 heads to the Northeast District Tournament to face Massasoit CC on Nov. 3. The winner of that game plays either Globe Institute (NY) or Monroe CC (NY) on Nov. 4. (In regular season action, 51黑料 defeated Monroe 2-1 and lost to Globe Institute 2-1 in overtime.) The district winner will travel to the NJCAA nationals. In 2006, the Vikings played in the NJCAA title game, losing 2-1 in double overtime.

Victory is sweet.
